LED lighting can produce lighting more than ten times efficiently, as measured in lumens per watt, than incandescent bulbs and twice as efficiently as compared with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), thereby greatly reducing lighting energy costs. As a SSL technology, LED lighting is also more rugged and longer lasting than these traditional vacuum tube lighting technologies and does not present the disposal concerns associated with lead and mercury found in incandescent and fluorescent lighting. Maintencance and other related costs are also considerably lower due to much longer life-span of LED based lighting solutions.

The substantial energy efficiency advantage and several other benefits of LED lighting are driving massive adoption of SSL as the manufacturing costs of this technology reduces. The combination of efficiency improvements and reducing costs already enables less than 2 year ROI on many applications and much shorter than that for some applications. This trend will continue favourably with continuing LED SSL technology innovation.
